Dining room ideas

For those who are lucky enough to have a separate dining room, the opportunity is there to make it into a really beautiful space in which to dine with the family or to entertain friends.  The good news is that much of the design work can be done without the assistance of tradesmen and without spending a lot of money.

Basic schemes

The size of the dining room will need to be taken into consideration when determining the color scheme.  A fairly small room will not be able to carry off a great deal of bright color or bold patterns, as this can seem overwhelming.  If there is a chimney breast in the room, it may work to have a bright color or pattern on this one wall to contrast with the rest of the room; otherwise, it may be a good idea to keep the whole room lighter.

Opting for lighter colors does not necessarily mean opting for cold colors, however.  There are plenty of neutral shades, such as cream, that will add warmth to the room while keeping it light and airy. Painting the room is a quick and simple job that can be done in a few hours with the right preparation.

A splash of color is always a good thing, and this can be added with accessories such as prints for the wall or a centerpiece for the table.  It is also a good idea to consider the flooring in the room.  Carpets can be warm but they can appear worn very quickly, particularly if the room is getting a lot of use.  Consider wooden flooring or laminate if the budget will not stretch to carpeting.  Provided that the room is not an awkward shape, wooden or laminate flooring is something that can be completed by the homeowner over the course of a day.

Dining room furniture

Additional warmth in the dining room can be achieved with cleverly chosen furniture.  Natural wood is a very big trend at the moment and this should be kept in mind when shopping for items such as dining table sets.  Natural wood furniture is a great investment, as it will last for years and over time will add character; wood has a tendency to age gracefully.

A dresser is a good feature for a touch of country-style character if there is enough space in the dining room, while a sideboard can be a useful item for storing crockery.  Apart from these items, it is a good idea to keep the room free from other furniture.  This ensures that the room has a feeling of space and that guests will not feel overwhelmed when they visit.

The dining room has a great deal of potential and it does not have to cost a lot of money to make the most of it.  It also does not have to take a lot of time to transform it from a cluttered and dark space into a light and airy room that will delight the family and guests alike.
